An extremely viscous, high molecular weight, liquid polyoxyalkylene polyol, Pluracol V- 10 has proven to be exceptionally effective as a thickening agent in water -glycol fire resistant hydraulic fluids. It is also economical to use... up to 20% less is required than with other thickeners commercially available.
Pluracol V-10 Polyol has excellent film forming properties and chemical and shear stability. Noncorrosive and non-foaming (it actually suppresses foam in formulations), Pluracol V-10 Polyol does not sludge or gum. In addition, it has good lubricating action, outstanding compatibility with other materials, and is not affected by hydrolysis, bacteria, oxidation or heat under normal use or storage conditions.
These properties suggest the use of Pluracol V-10 Polyol in various metal working applications. In metal quenchant formulations, Pluracol V-10 Polyol’s unique ability to plate out produces controlled cooling rates. It can also be used as a lubricant additive in metal cutting and grinding coolants. Pluracol V-10 Polyol can be used in other areas where plasticizing, lubricating and softening properties are desired.

Applications
Fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (water/glycol type)
This is Pluracol V-10 Polyol’s major application. In addition to the general benefits previously discussed, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in which Pluracol V-10 Polyol is employed offer other significant use advantages. These water-glycol solutions:
exhibit Newtonian rheoligical properties similar to those of petroleum oils
are not thixotropic, dilatant, stringy or tacky
have very high viscosity indices.
do not separate in normal use and storage
respond to anti-corrosion additives (Pluracol V-10 Polyol itself is not corrosive)
respond to anti-wear agents to enhance the lubricating characteristics of the Pluracol V-10 Polyol

The proportions of the components or the type of glycol can be varied to achieve specific requirements such as low temperature properties, flammability properties, viscosity and cost.
Other applications:
Although Pluracol® V-10 Polyol was developed specifically for use in water- glycol fire-resistant hydraulic fluids, its unique properties have proven inter-esting in the following applications.
Water-soluble cutting and grinding fluids:
Pluracol V-10 Polyol separates from a water solution onto the hot metal surface or the cutting edge. This phenomena provides better cooling, decreased tool wear, and improved surface finish.
Synthetic metal quenchants:
The unique property of Pluracol V-10 Polyol that allows it to plate out on hot metal surfaces, produces controlled cooling in quenching applications. Cooling rates can be controlled by varying the concentration of the quenchant bath.

For More Information
Toxicity:
Complete toxicity information on Pluracol V-10 Polyol has not yet been fully developed. Based on available information, the toxicity of Pluracol V-10 Polyol is estimated to be of a low order of magnitude. During the more than ten years of commercial use of this product, we are not aware of any toxicity problems experienced by our employees or by our customers.
The normal precautions exercised when handling any chemical should be used when working with Pluracol V-10 Polyol. Eye protection should be provided and prolonged contact with the skin should be avoided. In case of accidental contact, Pluracol V-10 Polyol can be readily flushed away with water. Due to its extremely low vapor pressure, inhalation of Pluracol V-10 Polyol vapors is not a problem.
Please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this product for instructions on safe and proper handling and disposal.
Availability:
Pluracol V-10 Polyol is available in commercial quantities in 55-gallon drums and in bulk, tank trucks and tank cars. Sample quantities may be requested for evaluation studies.
Shelf Life:
BASF will endorse the results on the certificate of analysis for a period of up to two years from the date of manufacture for material in original, unopened containers. Beyond two years, we recommend the quality of the material be confirmed prior to use, by retesting the certificate of analysis parameters.
